A. Dear Jo,
Thanks for the question, I'm sure you know that spiritual, moral, social and cultural values are evident in every area of the school curriculum, so of course that includes PE. Qualities such as trying your best, fair play, abiding by the rules, respecting other players and of course the referee, even if we don't agree with the decision, these are all important values that permeate into so many other areas of life. There is also the subject of being the best without the need to take drugs, etc... a healthy lifestyle. You can also look at the lives of inspirational sportspeople, see what motivates them, people such as Ellen MacArthur, Jason Robinson,Jonathan Edwards, etc.
Well, that's just a starter...if you require more help or inspiration, please contact us again...

Q. Really I havetwo questions - the first one is -What sort of clothes would Robin Hood and his Merry Men have worn and secondly what sort of games would have been played during the time of St. George and the Dragon
posted by Wherry on 09/02/2005

A. Dear Wherry,
What an interesting couple of questions...
Concerning clothing worn by Robin Hood and his merry men, you can check out this link http://www.houseofanoria.com/archer.htm
It shows some illustrations of types of clothing.
Your second question is slightly more difficult, but if you look at life around the year 300 that will give you some insight. Childhood games would have been very simple. Alot of time would have been spent learning from adults, so making tools, pots, cooking, collecting wood, wood carving. Chances are 'Pooh sticks' would have been a favourite (but obviously Winnie the Pooh was not born at that time). Soil drawing (creating art by using sticks in the soil)and stone and wood carving. A simple form of Hopscotch would possibly be a favourite...and of course there are singing games and not forgettting 'Dragon chase!'
I hope that's helpful...

Q. why do christians pray? I know that people pray for help and guidance but why else? posted by helen on 22/05/2005

A. Christians pray for a variety of reasons. Their faith in God is seen very much as a relationship and with any good friendship we need to communicate. Prayer can been seen as communicating with God and that could take a variety of forms...
Such as Praise, when we see the wonders of creation, pleading, when we would like to see something happen (healing for example)and saying sorry for the wrong things we have done or the right things we have not done...
I hope that is helpful

Q. Hi, I'm also a trainee teacher doing an essay on SMSC, when was SMSC introduced to schools, and why was it required? posted by Katt on 07/03/2006

A. Hello Katt,
there are obviously lots of students doing essays on SMSC...that's great...
The phrase SMSC was first thrust into the limelight in the Education Reform Act of 1988 as a statutory requirement.
SCAA (Now QCA) produced a comprehensive booklet on SMSC and SMSC has been included in all Education act amendments ever since.
However, the values associated with SMSC have been taught in schools up and down the country since the year dot!
There is the danger that because we've labelled it...it's something new...I personally believe it's not...a lot of SMSC is common sense and all about giving opportunities. But with the increased need for complex planning to ensure everything is included...it is only right that SMSC is planned for...
Hope that's helpful

Theme: Back 2 School

Q. I know it mught sound strange....but I'm getting to really dread the adverts on TV that talk about 'Back to School'...can you suggest anything? posted by Moira on 18/08/2003

A. My dear Moira,
What can I suggest....it seems to me that there might be a deeper problem that needs addressing. I think you need to focus on and enjoy the here and now, easier said than done I know...but little by little...set yourself small goals. But you need also to find out why you don't want to go back to school is is more than the usual not wanting to?
Please feel free to email me to discuss it further...if necessary I can put you in touch with some friends of mine...You also don't say if you are a pupil or a member of staff...
cheerio for now

Theme: Drug education

Q. Dear Morag, I have recently been appointed as PSHE co-ordinator for our school. Can you recommend any good resources for drug education -personal safety? If it was a multi-media resource, even better. Many thanks, Ann posted by Ann Eastfield on 08/05/2003

A. Dear Ann, Thank you for your message. Congratulations on your new post...I would like to recommend that you look at 'Sorting it Out'. For more information see their website www.sortingitout.org.uk. It is a multi-media resource using, printed material, video and the internet. I don't think you'll be disappointed... yours, Morag
