THE LIFE OF JESUS
Through the eyes of an artist
~Paul
Forsey
A fresh, illustrated Bible hopes to transform the way that
children comprehend the Christian scriptures….looks
at the events surrounding the life of Jesus in an innovative and inventive
manner. The Times, 13 March 2004
In this exciting project artist Paul
Forsey has depicted the life of Jesus through a collection of vibrant and
distinctive works of art. 22 key events are explored using striking, colourful
images. The artwork is true to the biblical narrative and the inclusion of
contemporary symbols gives a familiar window on to events of two thousand years
ago. The book is based on original paintings which Paul has exhibited around the
country. BRF, along with the Diocese of Oxford, were instrumental in developing
this into book format. It provides a unique opportunity for children of 7 to 11
and those who teach them to step into biblical scenes through the medium of such
strong and clear representations. Adults who wish to view Biblical events from a
fresh perspective will find much to stimulate and help them examine stories
through a different lens. The biblical text is taken from the Contemporary
English Version of the Bible and adds no interpretation or explanation, but
allows the artwork to transport the reader into a deeper understanding of the
events outlined.
Paul Forsey is a
full time artist and designer. He trained in Fine Art, painting and printmaking,
at the University of Reading, and is also a qualified teacher of Art and Design.
He has exhibited regularly and has work in many collections including the Arthur
Anderson Art Collection, P and O, the Gyosei International College and a series
of ten works on paper in the Strand Headquarters of Enterprise Oil. His
religious paintings have also been exhibited in church buildings all over
England. Before publication the illustrations have been exhibited on a national
tour, including York Minster, Sheffield Roman Catholic Cathedral, Lincoln
Cathedral and Wells Cathedral.
THE LIFE OF JESUS - TEACHER’S GUIDE
Through the eyes of an artist
~
David Barton with Jo Fageant
Foreword by Richard Harries, Bishop of Oxford
The
Teacher’s Guide provides a continuous story as a complement to the text of
the illustrated book. Accompanying notes add to the background information and
stimulate children to respond and question. Lesson planning guides for upper and
lower Key Stage Two are provided to ensure that the material is fully developed
and explored as a learning resource. Assessment questions for teachers round off
each unit.
David Barton has worked as a headteacher and as an education
adviser specialising in RE. He is an Anglican priest. Jo Fageant is a schools’
adviser for the Oxford Diocesan Board of Education. She is also an Ofsted
inspector of RE and works as an RE consultant with West Berkshire. The Diocese
of Oxford initially commissioned the artist Paul Forsey to produce
illustrations, and artwork for this project has been exhibited throughout the
country.
Quite
simply, a brilliant book…I warmly commend this.., which I believe could prove
something of a breakthrough for the teaching of RE.
From the
foreword by The Rt Revd Richard Harries, Bishop of Oxford.
