Stay Cool in School

How do children learn to deal with peer pressure, learn to admit that they were wrong, or accept apologies with grace? Margaret Goldthorpe’s new book STAY COOL IN SCHOOL aims to help 7 to 11 year-olds gain an understanding of moral issues as raised by Jesus in his Sermon on the Mount. This book is designed for use as part of the KS2 RE syllabus, but is also ideal for PSHE. It aims to give 7 to 11-year-olds an understanding of the Christian religion through a practical and experiential exploration of the moral and spiritual issues raised in the New Testament Bible, especially the part usually called ‘The Sermon on the Mount’. The book does not require the children to have Christian beliefs. It aims to help children of all faiths and none to have a real understanding of the way Jesus of Nazareth said we should live. Each issue is raised by a passage from the Sermon on the Mount and further illustrated in the selected stories, which also have a matching circle time. In these circles children are encouraged to consider the moral and ethical implications of Jesus’ advice for their own lives. The fourteen circle times are about issues such as how we handle a desire to show off, or learn to admit that we were wrong. The children are asked to think about making plans of action to manage these problems in the light of an increased understanding of their own behaviour. The wisdom from the Sermon on the Mount is on hand to guide them.

Year-round assemblies

What to do for the next school assembly or for the next all-age worship slot… With 'Year-round Assemblies', the new book by Brian Ogden and Jo Dobbs, you won’t have to ask yourself that question again for a whole year. This is a unique story-based resource book, designed to span three terms with ten collective assemblies in each, chronologically covering the lives of David, Jesus and Peter.
To provide a sense of anticipation and a break from traditional methods, without too much added work for already busy teachers or church leaders, a variety of storytelling approaches are used. Some are told by an adult leader and include ideas for interactive storytelling; some are designed for presentation by an individual class or group and are child-led. Some are based on drama outlines, with two or three voices sharing the narration, plus inclusive participation using OHP or similar visual aids.
Each assembly plan includes suggested hymns from 'Come and Praise' books 1 and 2. There are also three songs with simple on-the-page piano music, reflecting the lives of the characters featured, which have been especially written to accompany the material.
The extension activities cover a wide variety of PSHE/Citizenship objectives from the National Curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2. Within the activities are elements for discussion, writing, drama and research.
The book is suitable for 5-11s (Key Stages One and Two), Junior Church members and all-age congregations and includes photocopy permission.
