Assembly presentation
Show slide 1.
Tell the pupils that you have been exploring.
Ask them what exploring means and ask for suggestions as to why people might go
exploring. Show them your case or bag and remove the items one by one,
explaining that they are all things you found out about while you were on your
travels.
Show slide 2.
Tell the children that the first place you
explored was the Democratic Republic of Congo in central Africa, where you met
12-year-old Josué Kabula.
Show slide 3.
Josué’s favourite possession is his flipflops,
which he won in a running race. Josué’s family are very poor but an organisation
called Humanité Nouvelle helped his sister, Nadia, learn to sew. Now Nadia can
earn some money to pay for things like Josué’s school fees.
Show slide 4.
Say that you then went to India
and met 10-year-old Parvesh and his 6-year-old sister Kanchan. Last year the
river near to their home burst its banks and flooded their village. Parvesh and
his dad had live on the roof of their house for 13 days until they were rescued.
All they had to eat was rice made with dirty water.
Show slide 5.
An organisation in India called CASA is
helping Parvesh and other people affected by the flood by giving them things
they might need whilst they wait for the floodwaters to go down.
Show slide 6.
Go on to say that you next
explored Honduras in South America and that there you met 11-year-old Jerzon.
Jerzon loves to play football.
Show slide 7.
Jerzon and his family have been
shown how to grow different types of fruit and vegetables by an organisation in
Honduras called OCDIH. So now the family are able to eat a healthier diet. OCDIH
has also helped Jerzon’s family to build an oven that doesn’t need as much wood
to run as their old one and they’ve helped them build a toilet that disposes of
waste properly, which is healthier for the environment too.
Show slide 8.
Say that the last place you
explored was in the UK, where you met 10-year-old Jelisa. Jelisa loves
gymnastics and would like to be in the Olympics.
Show slide 9.
Jelisa and her friends at her
Brownie group made cakes and then sold them to their friends and family.
Show slide 10.
They gave the money they raised to
Christian Aid, a charity based in the UK and Ireland, which works with people of
all faiths around the world to help overcome poverty. Christian Aid then gave
this and other money to organisations such as Humanité Nouvelle, CASA and OCDIH
to help children like Josué, Parvesh, Kanchan and Jerzon all over the world.
