Bible comes to life in local schools…
The Bible comes to life in local schools:
“Creation of the world in ten minutes!”
“Invasion of frogs!”
“Death defying stunt in school hall!”
If you were to walk into primary schools throughout the country at the
moment, you might be treated to an unusual surprise. But no, you wouldn’t be
stepping back in time several thousand years, merely witnessing one the current
performances from the Rhema Theatre Company.
Currently touring throughout the country, they have developed a unique way to
both teach primary school children about Religious Studies and educate them
about the Jewish and Christian faiths.
The result is Amazing Tales from the Miracle Book, a theatrical
adventure, taking children through some of the more and some of the less
well-known stories from the Bible.
“The Bible is often seen as this stale, musty old book full of archaic
words and utterly meaningless to today’s society,” says Director Mike
Peacock,” in fact it is full of extraordinary stories and characters, who
often have a lot to teach us about ourselves. It is also interesting to see
how many writers throughout the ages have come to be inspired by it’s
characters. You couldn’t make this stuff up! We deliberately focus most of our
attention on the Old Testament because the stories from there have common
ground with several different faiths.”
Indeed, although the company only began touring eighteen months ago, they
have been well received in schools:
“A wonderfully vibrant performance, which absorbed all the children from 4
to 11 years old and brought the Bible to life in a meaningful and fun way.
Brilliant!”
- Chris Stott, Stretton St Matthew’s CE Primary School
“Amazing! Fantastic! Bible stories will never be the same again! What
enthusiasm, energy and talent. The best religious experience we’ve ever seen
in school.”
- Diana Hopkinson, St. Andrew’s C.E. Primary, Eccles
Each production has been devised to work in conjunction with the key stage 1
& 2 RE and PSHE curriculum and we offer a Teachers Pack as a resource with ideas
and worksheets that clearly fit in with those curriculums.
From reception all the way up to year six have pupils have been gripped by
the stories. The latest show includes the creation of the world set in a circus
and a rap of the Ten Commandments for the children to join in with amongst other
things!
Amazing Tales is touring nationally until 17th October.
