The Prodigal Son -art for all key stages

The story of the return of the prodigal son, taken from The Bible, has been a source of inspiration for artists down through the centuries. Probably the most famous is by Rembrandt (c 1662), this can be found at The Hermitage, St. Petersburg. (Biblical basis - Luke 15:11-32)

The return of the prodigal son- Rembrandt

Rembrandt uses a very limited palette of deep brown, ochre and white, but these are imbued with an internal warmth which issues from the vibrant and evocative reds and the warm, golden tints. He mingles light and darkness in a way that could suggest a burst of sunlight or even a rising dawn.

Notice the son's head has been shaved, what could that signify. Study his feet, bruised and dirty, his broken sandals.
This is a moment of intimacy, a moment of reconciliation, a moment to savour unconditional love.
Consider the elder brother; have their been times in our life when we know exactly what he's going through?...we have a choice, we can remain angry and bitter or we can choose to forgive and be reconciled. It's an act of the will and every ounce of our being will be saying no...don't forgive him.

The foolish father - Anne House

The original work of art was painted on silk. It is a particularly vibrant piece that is a part of The Parables Project.
Anne House uses imagery and movement to reinforce the powerful message of the story.
The despair, loneliness and sense of failure of the son,
the gentle encompassing embrace of the father, the celebration and rejoicing that reaches from earth to heaven at the safe return of the lost son. This inspired work of art has it all and more besides.

Originally commissioned by the dioceses of Exeter and Truro, this complete pack is now being marketed by Creative Teaching Supplies. The pack includes a variety of teaching and learning strategies.

Pupils should analyse and evaluate their own and others' work, express opinions and make reasoned judgements, this can link into the ICT and English curriculum at Key stage 3
