Sports xtra
To equip, educate and enrich the lives of young people through sport
Sports Xtra was formed in May 2002 with a vision to raise the standards of
sports provision and development within the local communities of Cambridgeshire.
It is their aim to create a fun, safe and supportive environment for children to
enjoy sport.
Their work has a wide range:
- running after-school sports clubs
- organising holiday Sports Weeks
- arranging sports-centred birthdays parties
- teaching curricular PE and sports in local schools
- working with children with special needs
- involvement in national sports initiatives
Another important part of Sport Xtra's work is teaching sports-related skills
to children with special needs such as Down's syndrome and autism. Sport Xtra have
courses running in the 4 special needs schools in Cambridgeshire. They also run the
Football Festival for children with special needs.
Experienced and qualified staff
The guys behind Sports-Xtra...
Gareth Lippiatt, has a wealth of experience in sports development both
in the UK and abroad. Since completing a Sports Science degree at Loughborough
University he has worked in Japan, Spain, the USA and all over the UK, coaching
and playing soccer, as well as a fitness consultant.
Colin Wells is also a Loughborough Sports Science graduate, and has an
MA in Organisation Studies from Warwick University. He is very capable sportsmen (he was once on the books of Manchester United!)
and an experienced coach. He now combines a love for sport with his passion for
working with young people. He works in primary schools on behalf of Comberton
Village College, where he has also taught PE.
Colin Hulett is from Durban, South Africa. A former PE teacher, he
brings experience and knowledge to the Sports Xtra team. He plays touch rugby
for the South Africa team, and is working to develop the sport in the UK.
Colin's other passion is for printing and designing. He has been instrumental in
developing the latest range of
Sports Xtra clothing.
All staff are verified by the Criminal Records Bureau and then undergo
further checks as part of our registration process with OFSTED.
Sports weeks
Sport Xtra started running Sports Weeks in 2002 as whole weeks of fun and sports
during the schools holidays. Since then, they have proved very popular.
Multi-Sports weeks offer almost every sport imaginable: football, kwick
cricket, touch rugby, relay races, dance, netball, athletics, basketball,
volleyball, tennis, hockey and rounders. Swimming is also available at some
venues. Structured coaching sessions take place in the mornings, in groups of
up to sixteen, with two coaches for each group. In the afternoons there is a
range of optional sports as well as some more restful activities such as
parachute games, giant jenga, arts and crafts, T-shirt design, Playstation 2
and videos.
On their first morning, the children are introduced to their team and their
leader for the week. Team points are won throughout the week for good
sportsmanship and team spirit. For many, the highlight of the day is the Team
Challenge, which is an opportunity to win points in races and challenges
against the other teams, using the skills learnt throughout the week. On the
last day, parents are invited to watch the competition finale and awards
ceremony.
Football Weeks
Sport Xtra's 'Football Weeks' are based on the FA's Soccer Star Challenge, and offer
coaching in six areas of the game, including dribbling, shooting and turning.
The children take part a series of fun challenges in a supportive and positive
environment. At the end of the week, the one with the most points receives the
coveted six star award, and everyone goes home with a certificate and badge to
reward their achievements.
So who said...
It's only a game...
