Growing Up Together
The Sex and Relationship guidance issued in July 2000 by the Department of
Education clearly states:
"Sex and relationship education should be firmly rooted in the framework of
PSHE [Personal, Social and Health Education]. Effective sex and
relationship education is essential if young people are to make responsible
and well informed decisions about their lives. It should not be delivered in
isolation.
"The objective of sex and relationship education is to help and support
young people through their physical, emotional and moral development. A
successful programme firmly embedded in PSHE will help young people learn to
respect themselves and others and move with confidence from childhood through
adolescence into adulthood."
A resource that has stood the test of time is Growing up Together. This rich
learning resource for pupils aged 6-12 was launched in 1997. Developed jointly
by CARE and Granada Learning these two resources combine to offer schools a
complete solution to their Personal, Social and Health Education needs.
The complete package includes the highly regarded Growing up Together
CD-ROMs and video.
Growing up together 1&2 covers essential areas of PSHE, including sex
discrimination. Pupils learn how to make more confident, informed choices about
health, environment, and learn to take more responsibility individually and as a
group.
Disc 1 covers areas such as celebrations and birthdays, parenting and
childbirth, personal hygiene and disability.
Disc 2 covers areas such as peer group pressure, sex education, anorexia,
loss and separation
Both CD-ROM and video use film footage to present real life situations
followed by off-screen worksheets and questions for further class work.
The Video also contains a teacher training section with questions to assist
schools in developing their PSHE policy documents and teaching strategies.
