Why are people hungry?

Hungry now
Meet Sikhulekil Ennandebale and her friend Sithandekile. They are both 13 years old and they live in Zimbabwe. One of the reasons they do not have enough food is because of drought. CAFOD is providing nutritious food for some of the hungry people in southern Africa.

Hungry because of trade
These are special tomatoes for fiesta time. This little boy’s family used to earn money by growing coffee. The price of coffee has gone down and unfair trade rules mean his family no longer make enough money to buy food. CAFOD’s partners have helped the people in his village in Mexico. CAFOD is also campaigning to make the trade rules fair for everyone.

Hungry because of debt
These children do not always get three meals a day. They live in a country called Zambia. Zambia is a poor country and it has borrowed money from the rich countries. The rich countries want even more money back and this means the government cannot help poor people. CAFOD is campaigning to cancel the debts the poor countries owe the rich. It might mean these children get enough to eat.

Hungry because of war
Martin is a fisherman from Sri Lanka. When his town was bombed in the war Martin had to move his family to a safe place to live. He says, “I had to sell my motor boat and the engine to feed my children and wife.” CAFOD helped Martin to buy a new boat, which he shares with other fishermen. Because of the fighting, Martin can only fish some of the time, but at least he can feed his family. He hopes for peace and would like to return to his old home when the war is over.

Hungry because of drought
In Zambia the land is very dry. Sometimes it is so dry that the crops will not grow and people do not have enough to eat. CAFOD helps people to build wells and pumps so that they have enough water for their families and crops.

Sharing to end hunger
Can you see what this lady is doing? She’s making soup in a community kitchen. People can come here to get a cheap and healthy meal. A lot of people in Peru cannot find jobs. Peru is in debt to richer countries and finds it hard to look after the poorest people. CAFOD is helping people to run kitchens, to make sure that everyone can have a healthy meal.
