This lesson is constructed around
this guardian website on refugees:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/page/refugeetrail
(If not available the teacher could print off the information and do it
in class, but this would be difficult. Have a world map to stick on the
wall. Pins or stickers could then be stuck on to the map to show where the
refugees are coming from during the feedback session.)
|
10 mins
|
Do not let the students log on
initially as this will distract them from the initial discussion. The
information on the computers is to facilitate discussion.
As a whole class students to suggest definitions for:What is a refugee?
What is an 'asylum seeker'?
Come up with suitable definitions eg.
Then, in pairs students to discuss:
- Are there too many refugees and asylum seekers?
- Where do they think these people come from?
- Why do they come?
This will indicate any views they have already.
|
20 mins
|
Students then log on to the website
address. This website takes students through the places where refugees/asylum seekers
come from and the reasons why they come to the UK.
Students to work in pairs using the information on the site:
- 1. HOW MANY asylum seekers/refugees come to the UK
- 2. WHERE they are coming from
- 3. WHY they are coming
|
10-15mins
|
Feedback to the group (this may
well need to extend into another lesson). Discuss if there is anything that
surprises them in the light of their previous views. Plot where the refugees
are coming from on the world map. Students should then log off the
computers. |
| Extension work:
|
Students could complete a
mini-project or display on refugees and asylum seekers using the information
on the website, or design a leaflet to raise awareness. |
