Secondary Physical Education Lesson Plan

Context: KS3 POS10a, b

Activity: Athletics Circuit

Prior Learning: Pupils should have understanding of the throwing, jumping and running principles.

Today: Pupils will use and develop a range of throwing, jumping and running principles in an athletes circuit. Pupils will wear a pedometer and record which athletic activity uses the most amount of steps and calories used. This will develop knowledge of which athletic activities are more physically demanding.

Learning Objectives: What the pupils will be learning (knowing, understanding and doing) during the lesson:

Acquire and Develop skills:

1. Develop a range of athletic principles and techniques through recording and setting targets.

2. Develop knowledge of which types of exercise develop specific components of fitness.

Knowledge and Understand of Health and Fitness:

3. Develop understanding of the demands different athletic activities place on the body.

Pupils will be assessed formatively against the following Learning Outcomes: (What the pupils should be able to demonstrate at the end of the lesson):

1. Pupils should demonstrate a range of athletic principles

2. Pupils should be able to state which components of fitness are strengthened by which activities.

3. Use the pedometer to highlight which exercises place more demand on the body.

Health and Safety:

No Jewellery, hair tied back, correct PE kit, no chewing gum. Listen to safety points and instructions clearly. Only collect equipment when indicated to do so by the teacher.

Facility, Resources, Equipment:

Mat, Chalk, Tape measure, Cones, Bench, Stop watch, Music

Intro lesson aims

Through out the lesson task set – Q. Which activity enhances which component of fitness? Also which activity uses the most amounts of steps?

Warm up
Body Parts

When a specific body part is called out pupils touch this area on the floor on as quickly as possible and then continue running.

Group stretching – semi circle and questioning.
Also select pupils to lead stretching.
(10mins) Explanation of each station with a demonstration of each activity
Organise the pupils into suitable numbered groups –

2s or 4s and allocated to a specified station.
Pupils will work with a partner; while one pupil is working the other is resting and encouraging their partner. One pupil will wear a pedometer and record the number of steps used during each activity.

Pupils can work for 1min or 1.30min dependant upon the lesson time.
