What on earth is Pentecost all about?

Spell PENTECOST

Resources: You will need the following resources: the word PENTECOST with a letter on each piece of card, a piece of string across the hall like a washing line for al the children to be able to see. On the back of each letter should be the corresponding word as outlined in the core material.

Introduction: Explain that Pentecost is a Christian festival that is celebrated in late May. We sometimes call it Whitsun. Explain the origins of Whitsun by what happened at the special feast called Pentecost nearly 2000 years ago?

Core Material

Note: Make sure that before you start this assemblies, you have read the following passage so that you can tell the story in your own way.

First of all, put all the letters that make up the word......
P E N T E C O S T on the line and then tell the story. As you deal with each letter, turn it around with the whole word on.

Start with letter 1. and then leave enough space for all the other letters when you put up 2.

P 1. people there were thousands of people in Jerusalem for the feast of weeks or feast of Pentecost
E 7. everybody everybody heard what was going on in their own language
N 3. nothing it was nothing weird or strange - it was something special that God was doing
T 4. tongues what seemed like a tongue of fire appeared to touch each of them
E 5. encouraged the disciples were really encouraged by what was happening and went out into the street
C 6. crowd a massive crowd gathered together to hear Peter preach
O 8. only only nine in the morning
S 2. suddenly all of a sudden there was a sound like a strong wind blowing through the house
T 9. told Peter stood up and told everyone there why Jesus died and why he sent his holy spirit

After you have done this, turn the letters around and see if the children can remember the story as you turn the words around in their numerical order.

Conclusion: all the events surrounding the day of Pentecost, whilst unusual, made far bigger changes that we can at first imagine. Not only did the disciples change from being scared to share about Jesus, but nearly 3000 other people also changed, which meant that the church grew by 3000 people on its very first day!

Prayer/Reflection

Dear God, thank you for the changes we can read/hear about that happened during the Day of Pentecost nearly 2000 years ago. May we too be prepared to change like the disciples were. Amen.
